Soul Marauder: The Exclusive AmorJones.com Interview

How old are you? Where are you from? What's the hip-hop scene like there? I'm an 18-year-old beat-maker/producer from Queensland, Australia. We have a small hip-hop scene by international standards, but it's definitely growing by the day. Our biggest exports so far have been producer M-Phazes (Pharoahe Monch, Slaughterhouse), Hilltop Hoods and Bliss-n-Eso. These guys have had chart-topping albums and hit songs here but haven't yet found considerable success overseas. I'm striving to bridge the gap between the Australian and US hip-hop scenes through my production. How did you get into production? How long have you been making beats? I started making beats around four years ago. It was albums like The Chronic and Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) that really got me interested in finding the original samples they used, and that initial fascination led to me wanting to try production for myself. I started off just playing around with the effects in Audacity - which was extremely primitive as far as making beats is concerned - before moving over to Sony Acid Pro. I've also recently started using Ableton Live for my production. How did you connect with Amor Jones originally? I was already familiar with his first mixtape because of Nefarious' production. So I think I had him on Myspace, and when I started a Twitter account I began following a lot of the same people. Amor heard the beat that would become "Right Now" on my Bandcamp page and reached out. What did you think of the "Right Now" instrumental when you first made it? That beat was made in late 2009. I remember being really proud of it because it was one of my first tracks that didn't rely on samples, and it just had such a feel-good, summery vibe. It didn't really sound like anything else I had made, and it sounded different to most of the other beats around at that time. What did you think the first time Amor Jones played you "Right Now"? When he sent me the demo mp3, I was stoked. I played it to nearly everyone I knew and got such an overwhelmingly positive response. I don't think a lot of my friends expected me to make something like that, because it doesn't sound like my usual stuff. It's just one of those songs that can be played anywhere and put smiles on people's faces. How would you describe the sound of "Right Now"? "Right Now" makes me think of summer - sunshine, no clouds out, beach party music. And Amor Jones' lyrics are very inspirational. It's all about moving forward, following your dreams, striving for greatness. I feel that a lot of people can relate to that feeling, like "look at me, I made it". That's the sort of vibe it gives me. What else are you working on? How can rappers get beats from you? I'm currently working on some stuff with a friend of mine who is living interstate. We're planning on making an album to be released later this year, and you can check out one of our new tracks here. I'm currently studying a Bachelor of Music at university so I'm not making beats as often as I'd like to, but I'm definitely still active in production. College Kid

So unlike most people, after high school I didn't go right to college (I actually speak about on my song "Sound Check".) Instead, I worked & eventually moved out to the west coast. Well, I'm finally about to step foot on a college campus to take classes, not just to party. It'll be crazy but I'm glad to enter in a new phase in life. My backup plan is still going gold instead of platinum, though. Believe that.

The World Of Jones #2 - The Inspiration

As of lately, I've been feeling real inspired. I can't really tell you why...all I know is, I woke up one morning feeling more determined than usual. That determination hasn't slowed up. Not one bit. The World of Jones...not to be confused with World of Jenks. Most of you know me for my music (I assume you do because you're on AmorJones.com) but I'm going to use this blog to let you guys know about the man behind the music. Jones is actually my last name. First name is Aaron. Feel free just to call me Jones. I like dope beats, good music, double-doubles from In-N-Out & long walks on the beach. I put my heart & soul into my music and that's what I hope to display in my rhymes. But yeah, tons of new music is coming soon so just stay tuned and spread the word!
